Golfer Trpp Isenhour Kills a Hawk

Tripp Isenhour, who is a PGA tour golfer was recently with a film crew as they taped a show called "Shoot Like a Pro". There was a hawk that was apparently making some noise so to get rid of the problem what Tripp Isenhour did was shoot some golf shots at the hawk which he ended up succeeding at and has now been charged with cruelty to animals and killing a migratory bird. Tripp, whos real name is John Henry Isenhour III faces a maximum penalty of 14 months in jail and a $1,500.00 fine. According to court documents, Isenhour got upset when a red-shouldered hawk began making noise, forcing another take. He began hitting balls at the bird, then 300 yards away, but gave up. Isenhour started again when the hawk moved within about 75 yards, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer Brian Baine indicated in a report. Isenhour allegedly said "I'll get him now," and aimed for the hawk. "About the sixth ball came very near the bird's head, and (Isenhour) was very excited that it was so close," Baine wrote. A few shots later, witnesses said he hit the hawk. The bird, protected as a migratory species, fell to the ground bleeding from both nostrils.

He many have thought that he could not realistically hit the bird but he did and should be punished for his actions. This is really a dumb thing to do, a real sign of immaturity. Just seems like something a child would aim to do. Maybe his punishment should be to put him in the middle of a game of dodge ball and let them throw some golf balls at him instead of a dodge ball. Not that anyone would want one to crack one on his head and take him out or anything but just to give him a good hurting.

The NCAA and the NBA: Interlocked

Several decades ago, the drafting of players by the National Basketball Association was afforded only to those who have already passed and graduated from their collegiate classes. This arrangement was found to be a mutually favorable affiliation between the NBA and universities or colleges. This way, the universities and colleges mainly held only onto players who otherwise went toward the professional basketball league. By the same token, the NBA did not need to fund minor leagues.

However, basketball games in the collegiate levels developed commercialization overtime. This progress made it even more difficult for student athletes to take on their responsibilities as regular students. Particularly, statistics reflected an overwhelming growth in the number of under-educated and poor, yet extremely talented youth basketball players. This finding created an exploitative image for the NCAA and NBA-adopted system.

In an effort to resolve this setback, the American Basketball Association started employing players who have not graduated yet from their college classes. Because of this, a legal conflict ensued up to the Supreme Court of the United States regarding players who were drafted to the NBA. In the legal battle, players insisted their need for the job in professional basketball to support their family. In 1971, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the NBA did not hold an "antitrust exemption" that Major League Baseball did. Thereafter, collegiate players belonging to the economically deprived were permitted early entry unto NBA Drafts. The requirement on hardship was then abolished five years later.

The past three decades marked a noteworthy change in collegiate games. Many American international basketball players skipped college routinely. This group included Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, LeBron James and Tracy McGrady; and Carmelo Anthony who played one year in college basketball. Notably, the annual NBA draft had only selected a few college graduates among its sixty players selected.

There are much fewer high school basketball aspirants that directly progress unto the professional basketball league without at least a year of involvement in college basketball starting in the year 2006. This system cites some maturity concerns following disputes over young players. To be eligible, labor agreements between league owners and basketball players now stipulate for players to turn 19 years old within the draft's calendar year. Players from the U.S. are required to be a year, at least, when removed from graduation in high school.

Undisputedly, the popularity of college basketball in all states in the U.S. is largely attributed to the huge number of graduates from universities that hold major basketball conferences. College basketball is also kept alive by the NCAA's advertising of their "March Madness," which officially is NCAA Men's Basketball Championship for Division I. Though certain commentators argue that the high turnover of players increases the need for good coaches, numerous teams achieved unprecedented success by putting ample emphasis on "personality" in their recruiting programs. The NCAA organizers have also disclosed their goal to create cohesive groups that play together for four years, which develops higher sophistication, that other teams with less stability are deemed to achieve.

While the UFC is the most popular mixed martial arts fighting organization in the U.S., the International Fight League or IFL is working to rival the UFC for attention.

The International Fight League was founded in January of 2006 and has a different approach to mixed martial arts competition by using team match ups. Each team has a coach and fighters in each of five weight classes. This team approach is closer to wrestling where remembers face off and each victory counts as points for the team. The first team to win three out of five matches is declared the winner.

Teams compete throughout the season and the two winning teams then compete for the team championship. Like other sports, each league name is related to the city in which they train. The IFL also holds open drafts to find new talent unlike the UFC. They seek skilled fighters that will add excitement to the sport of mixed martial arts.

Although the IFL focuses on the team aspect, they still allow for individual matches and championships. The company takes the top competitors from each of its weight classes and has them compete in individual matches for a championship title. This practice appeases the team format critics and also gives recognition to the fighters. Fighters get the chance to highlight their individual skills and win championship title just for themselves.

IFL fights are broadcast on FSN and MyNetwork and although are not as popular as UFC fights are gaining popularity as mixed martial arts get more popular in general. The event is also trying to change mixed martial arts convention in the way they treat their players. Because the IFL uses a team format, they want to offer regular fighters a base salary and even health insurance as well as fight winnings. These ideas are quite revolutionary for the world of mixed martial arts but will probably prove popular with both fighters and mixed martial arts fans. International Fight League fighters still make a decent living, most make between five and six figures depending on their fight records and performance.

The International Fight League is also different form the UFC because it offers their fighters more security. The UFC is quick to drop fighters that are not performing well. The International Fight League puts more weight on the team aspect and the excitement of the match. As long as an International Fight League fighter puts on an exciting show, they are likely to stick around.

Although the event is not yet as popular as the UFC, as mixed martial arts become more popular the league is sure to gain even more fans. The UFC faced extreme opposition in its early days, but the International Fight League has not endured as much controversy so it is sure to gain rapid popularity in the years to come.

Brent Barry, who was surprised at the San Antonio Spurs move to trade him to Seattle for Kurt Thomas may soon become a Phoenix Sun. The Sonics acquired him with the plan to release him last Friday. Barry will clear waivers today and can sign with any team but San Antonio, which must wait 30 days after the trade to do so. Barry, 36, has told his suitors - Phoenix, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas and Boston - that he will commit to a team today but has not yet done so. Phoenix GM Steve Kerr has let Barry know how much the Suns organization wants him. Kerr even personally paid a visit to Barry's home to convince him to sign with the Suns. Phoenix could use another three-point threat like Barry who would automatically open up their spacing on the floor.

Yao Ming out for the rest of the season

The Houston Rockets who have been on a row lately and are currently carrying a 13 game winning streak have learned that their star player Yao Ming will be out of action for the rest of the season as he has a stress fracture in his left foot. This leads to the question - can the Rockets win a championship without Yao Ming? Some have even stated that the Rockets are better off just losing a lot of games so that they can get a better lottery pick next year. I personally think that's a crappy way of thinking and I do not think they can win it with out Yao Ming but, heck, you never know, you got to give your all. Even with Ming in the line up I still don't think Houston would have a chance this season to even make the conference finals against the tough West. Just can't see them getting by the Spurs, Suns or the Lakers and feel that they may even struggle against some of the other teams. But to call it quits on the season - NEVER - You just never know.

On Wednesday Kobe Bryant and the Lakers traveled to Phoenix to battle Shaquille O'Neal and the Phoenix Suns. The rivalry between the Lakers has been a great one and with the addition of Shaq to the Suns it made the rivalry even bigger. It was a basketball game that I just couldn't miss and I wasn't the only one because it has been reported that the game had the third highest television ratings for a regular season game in the history of the NBA. The two teams gave us a game to remember as it went down to the wire with the Lakers getting the win at the end. Both Kobe and Shaq gave us a few highlights too. It was a great game!

The NBA All Star game was held in New Orleans minus Kevin Garnett and a little, just a little of Kobe Bryant. The game was actually a game though as it went down to the wire with Ray Allen and Lebron James sealing the East 134-128 win in the fourth quarter with there marvelous play. Ray Allen had 28 points and got three point happy in the fourth quarter. Lebron James scored 27 points, had 8 rebounds and 9 assist good enough to win him All Star game MVP honors for the second time in 3 years, remember he is only 23 years old. The guy who won last years All Star game MVP honors only played three minutes in the game, sort of a cameo appearance. Yes, that man is Kobe Bryant who is nursing his dislocated pinkie finger and thought best to rest for most of the game which was fine with the West coach and former Lakers team mate Byron Scott. New Orleans hero and home town favorite Chris Paul had an excellent game scoring 16 points and sharing the ball plenty with 14 assist.

What I Know and Remember about Baseball - Batting Slumps

For what ever the reason, nearly every person who has played baseball runs into a slump. The prospect of buying a base hit is all that seems left for the player to get past the desperation of hitting anything.

Pressure placed upon ourselves for letting the team down, pressure from out statistics going in the toilet and pressure from teammates; while nothing is said, the looks and actions tell the real story of what they are holding back. It can be a spiral that places doubt in all your abilities, creating hesitation and second guessing what you already know what to do.

Batting slumps can do far more that merely divot the batting averages. It is important for Players and Coaches to recognize these slumps and do all they can to get their player, teammate back on track. Any chain is only as strong as its weakest link. All links get fatigued and need the time and attention of restoring the temper.

Baseball Players in batting slumps have great difficulty in observing their actions objectively. The best meaning parent can have this same trouble of objective detachment. Even they Players coach can loose the objective focus it takes to figure out what the real trouble is.

Younger Players have the most difficulty developing a consistent swing throughout the season. Constantly changing bodies is the number one culprit. Growth spurts, hormone changes, broader interests, emotions; you name it, everything a healthy growing body goes through affects their swing to some degree.

Intensity changes in activity is largely overlooked as contributors to swing changes. If your Player was dynamite during spring ball but seemed to unwind in summer ball, look to the off diamond activity. It is likely you will find the during spring ball and the school year the Player was on a good regiment. The freedom of summer and no school the structured day to day is gone.

Enterprising Players take the summer time to earn the dollars necessary to support their dreams. Jobs available to these people are usually heavy on the labor. Its simple physics to deduce that heavier work plus longer work hours will invariably build strength. Now that 31 they had been swinging like a pro is coming around too fast and at all sorts of wood chopping angles.

Now that we have covered the detrimental affects of a batting slump, the never ending array of reasons why the slump started and that the inner circle of the Players world may not be able to identify the issue, is there a fix?

Back to the basics, first up, put the bat on the ball. Do the T work under the Coaches eye. Use video to slow things down to take a bit by bit look. If the corrections are not working, seek a once over from a different coach. One of the wonderful things about baseball is the willingness of all Coaches to see all Players succeed. Be it League, Division or School, there is someone closer than you think that would be more than happy to spend and hour to two getting your swing back on track.

Time spent at the batting cage can be useful too. Particularly good is bunting in the cage, yes bunting. The batting slump is a simple result, the bat is not being put on the ball. So, when you can go to the cage and drop a tokens worth of pitches dead, you are now putting the bat on the ball. Start by being square to the machine and catch each pitch with the bat. Once that is done, take your normal stance and go through the whole motion. Drop another token and drop those pitches.

Even if your batting slump is mid season, developing your bunting skills are practical training. If your not ready to swing away, bunting yourself on base is still a base. While your out there, go ahead a steal one too. Plus when you are at the plate, and the pitcher hangs a cure ball, well, smashing that one is going to be a confidence builder.

No access to a baseball batting cage, no problem. Toss yourself the baseball and hit it into the backstop or other net that is not likely to break or get you into trouble. Again, the object is to put the bat on the ball. Even a bad toss you have to chase a little bit to hit is ok. Hitting from different locations, walking to retrieve the ball and hit again; drills like this add variation you will not find at stationary batting Ts or cages.

Inner city Players have options too. Grab your buddies and go play some stick ball. When your buddies are not available, do the toss drill above with a stick bat and golf ball size whiffle ball.

The solution to a baseball batting slump is to discover what has changed and make the corrections to bring back your success. Get back to the basics of putting the bat on the ball in varying situations not all customary and usual.

Above all, the most significant thing you can do to end your slump is to be patient with yourself.

Baseball legend Nolan Ryan is back with the Texas Rangers. This not not as the all time strike out king but as the Rangers team president. Only now, the 61-year-old who set many of his greatest milestones in a Rangers jersey is tasked with doing the same from the front office.

"Another thing in my career that I never anticipated," Ryan said. "You really wonder where baseball and life is going to take you."

Ryan threw an unmatched seven no-hitters and won 324 games in a record 27 major league seasons. The last five of those came with the Rangers and included his final two no-hitters and 5,000th strikeout. Ryan got a hero's reception at The Ballpark in Arlington, where his number remains the only one to ever be retired by the Rangers. A packed hall of onlookers cheered as Hicks introduced his latest hire with a video highlight package that trumpeted the return of The Ryan Express. Ryan will be in charge of baseball operations, a role that Hicks said Cogen didn't have as president. Hicks described Ryan as an asset useful in evaluating the character of players and prospects while dealing with business issues as president.

"It's hard for me to predict what impact I might have on the baseball business aspect of it," Ryan said. "I think I probably have a better feel for the playing aspect of it."

What they see everyday at home is a beautiful sight. They see a child who has untapped energy resources and a new vigor that they have not witnessed in many years. Most golf courses are about 7,000 yards in length, which equates to about four miles.That measurement is normally measured in an almost straight line from the tee box to the center of the cup on each hole.

However, most golfers do not hit the ball in a straight line down the course from hole to hole. In fact, for many of us, it seems we spend our entire round zigzagging the course. Until the 1960s, most golf courses were played exclusively on foot. Golfers would carry their own bags, or pull them behind them on a pull cart.

For those who were fortunate enough to play golf at country clubs, caddies were provided to carry the players clubs, but most were still looking at a five-mile walk. Additionally, because walking is such a slow pace, many courses would have to schedule tee times at intervals that would accommodate walking.

This changed in 1962 when Merlin L. Halvorson invented the first self-propelled golf car. A golf cart is something that is pulled and a golf car is something that propels itself.

Somehow, this terminology has become confused and intertwined over the years but when someone says golf cart, the normally think of the vehicle that one rides in on a golf course. In the 1960s, the game and technology evolved with the development of the modern day golf car. These cars were built with gasoline motors to transport two golfers, and their golf clubs, around the course.

The major manufacturers at the time were E-Z-GO, Pargo, Harley Davidson and Cushman. The body frames, the undercarriage and suspensions closely resemble those of modern automobiles. The rubber tires are similar to those on cars, but the treads are designed in a way that the cart may be driving on grass and not damage the turf on a golf course.

Controls include a modern steering wheel, accelerator and brake, where the brake also has a lock, to ensure that the car does not roll freely on inclines. Accessories on the modern golf cart include straps to secure the golf bags, a basket (for towels, balls, coolers, etc), cup holders, ball compartments and holes that golfers can slide a few extra golf tees into.

To be more environmentally friendly, many golf carts are now manufactured with electric, battery powered motors. These batteries are rechargeable, and a charge can normally last through several days and rounds of golf.

However, there is still demand for the gas powered golf cars, especially on golf courses where the rolling terrain may require extra horsepower for the car to climb hills. Todays largest manufacturers of golf cars are Ingersoll Rand (Club Car), E-Z-Go and Yamaha.

So much for the Disneyland fairy tail perfect season. The New York Giants beat the New England Patriots 17-14 in Super Bowl 42 despite being heavy underdogs. The game was a highly played defensive game from both sides. The Giants did a great job at stopping one of the all time great offenses. It looked like the Patriots would complete their perfect season when MVP Tom Brady found Randy Moss for a 6-yard touchdown with 2:42 to go. After that the Patriots defense couldn't stop a final, frantic 12-play, 83-yard drive. It featured Eli Manning's unlikely sack-avoiding scramble and a spectacular leaping catch by David Tyree, who had scored New York's first touchdown on the opening drive of the fourth quarter. Then with 35 seconds left in the game Eli Manning's touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress gave the Giants a 17-14 lead. MVP Tom Brady had little time to rescue the Patriots but could not complete any of his long pass attempts, on one play getting sacked hard by New York Giants rookie J. Alford. The Patriots had a fairy tale season all year long (18-0 - Now 18-1) but it was the Giants who had a fairy tale ending season.

Setting Up Your Own Hunting Camp

The first thing to do before setting up any hunting camp is to ascertain whether camping is permitted. Most camps for hunting big game will be located on public lands such as the National Forests where camping is generally open to the public.

WATER AND WOOD

The two basic necessities for any big-game camp are a suitable supply of water and ample firewood. In the habitat of the larger species of big game, the water problem tends to solve itself. Moose, elk, caribou, and grizzly country is normally watershed country where rivers and lakes are born.

In such country there is usually ample fresh water. Moreover, the water found in high mountainous country has not been contaminated with sewage and pollution and is safe and pure. Higher country is largely wooded country, and the problem of firewood is easily solved. Most of the wood there will be pine, fir, spruce, and aspen.

SELECTING A CAMPSITE

Choose a campsite close to the water supply and as close as possible to dry wood. The sandy beaches or shore lines of mountain lakes, so long as they are well above waterline, often make good campsites. So do the points of small promontories overlooking a creek or lake. The edge areas where timber meets meadow, small elevated river bars, or small humps of semi-open land near timber are suitable campsites if water is handy.

In each instance, camp should be set up on some kind of elevated ground. This insures that the earth will be comparatively dry, and that sudden storms won't drown out a camp by draining water under it. For this reason, it is never wise to camp in gully bottoms, however attractive they seem to be. Flash floods in mountain and desert country can suddenly send awesome amounts of water through such gullies.

PITCHING CAMP

Once having chosen the campsite, the first thing to do is unload the pack animals, if you are packing into a hunting camp. It is a cardinal sin to allow any pack animal to remain loaded for even a few minutes once it has reached its destination.

The next thing to do is to get a tent set up. In the mountains, storms come up out of nowhere and can saturate people and gear in minutes unless dry storage space is provided.

Miner's tents are pegged down at all four corners and their tops tied to the crosses of two shear poles (dry standing jackpines or large willows make good shear poles), and the poles stood erect.

A baker tent is pegged down at the rear; the flap for its open front is placed over a ridgepole set upon two sets of shear poles, stretched taut and tied. GARBAGE PIT AND LATRINE

A garbage pit and some form of latrine are necessary for sanitation. Both should be downwind and downstream of the camp, the latrine the farthest away, in a clump of trees if possible.

The garbage pit is simply a hole dug in the ground. Tin cans, empty bottles, vegetable peelings, and food scraps are all heaved into the pit. A thin layer of dirt spread on top each day over the accumulated refuse is the best guarantee against flies around camp. When camp is broken, the entire pit is filled and covered.

Camp latrines are of different kinds, depending upon the permanence of the camp and the availability of transportation. The simplest is a long smooth pole, anchored at toilet-seat height between two trees, with its middle over a dug hole in the earth.

As a kid when someone mentions golfing the first thing that you will remember is going to your local place to putt and putting with your family. The first thing that you will need to learn about putting knows the distance from your club to the hole that you are trying to make. When you putt you wont need to hit the ball as hard as you can anymore you will need to hit the ball less so you can make it nice and easy into the hole in which you are putting. You will need to know how far it is from your club to the hole and you should be able to make a putt by knowing just this. You can walk from your club to the hole and measure in your head how far it is then try and make your shot. This will allow you to actually get a good feel of how far it is away then you can try and make your putt. So for every foot your ball must travel you should pull the putter back an inch.

When you are putting you should also never allow your head to move. When you move your head and eyes then your eyes will think that you need hit the ball harder but you really don't because you are already in position to make the putt. You will not want to move your head until the ball is out of your sight. After the ball is out of your sight then you can move your head but you still need to practice on your putting if you move your head. People who move their heads will think that they are doing well but the key to a good putt is staying still and intact.

So the next time someone says look at me for a picture when you are about to putt just makes your putt then take the picture. Just be sure that you don't move your head until you hit the ball with your club. So just take your time when you putt and you should start getting your putt down like a pro. If you still cannot get your putt down then you just need to go get some practice in and start going to putt a little more then usual. If you have your putt down good enough then you can start really playing golf with some of your friends.

What is going on with the Miami Heat. It was just yesterday that they were the NBA Champions and now in the 07-08 season they are the second worst team in the league with an 8-32 record and have lost 14 games in a row at this moment. I'm sure some Miami Heat haters have got to at least feel a little sorry for this team, to go from so high to down low that quickly is just painful for anyone to watch.

Shaquille Oneal is just not the same Shaq from the past and his dominant career may possibly be over. The guy is just averaging under 15 points a game. OK numbers for any other center but not for the self proclaimed 'Man of Steel'. Shaq will be 36 years old this year and I just don't see him going much further.

Dwayne Wade is still doing what he does best. Wade is still a great player but has become one of your great player on lousy teams kind of guy now. Without a dominant center in the middle Wade may have to go through what Kobe went through when he lost Shaq. Kobe has spent years suffering and trying to get the Lakers into a championship caliber team, this despite being the best player in the NBA. Kobe would manage to get the Lakers into the playoffs all the time but they would just never get to far. Up until the 2007-2008 season Kobe has struggled but seems to now have now learned how to win without Shaq. Dwayne Wade will need to do the same thing. Wade being young and the great player that he is will learn too, guaranteed.

Boxing lost one of it's classic boxers on Saturday. Hall of Famer Duilio Loi passed away at the age of 79 in Treviso, Italy. Loi boxed for fourteen years and had a great 115-3-8 record, knocking out 26 along the way. Duilio was a former Junior Welterweight Champion in the 60's and one of the greatest boxers to ever come out of Italy. Duilio is probably not known as well as he should be by todays boxing fans but he was the true Italian Stallion.

Cleveland Cavalier superstar Lebron James got a speeding ticket for his 23rd birthday. On December 30 at 3:00 AM State Highway Patrol caught Lebron James flying at 101 MPH in a 65 MPH zone. He said that it was no big deal and that he just made a mistake and got caught. When asked if he would speed like that again in the future he said "I don't know, maybe at times".

Having watched multicoloured snakes of tiny children on the ski slopes, many parents are desperate to take their own offspring skiing. They have this idea of what fun it would be to glide elegantly en famille down the blue runs, their grateful children glowing with health and grinning from ear to ear...

It can happen like that, and when it does there's nothing better, but there's a lot of work along the way before you arrive at that stage.

Children can start to ski a little at two, if they are confident, co-ordinated and relatively fearless. Little boys seem to take to it earlier than girls, perhaps because they don't have the intelligence to imagine how much careering into a tree could sting! But you need good weather, good snow, a very gentle nursery slope and lots of time and patience, one to one. They can manage about an hour per day, probably at lunchtime, when the weather is warmer and the slopes at their emptiest.

Possibly the best preparation for skiing is tobogganing. The combination of speed, terror and lack of control is good practice. Beware, however: sledges are faster and more dangerous than skis. You need to pick your slope very carefully!

When your child is ready to start skiing, don't be fobbed off with plastic imitations of skis: he should have proper little skis and rear-entry boots. He does not need poles, however. He must have sunglasses or goggles. He probably won't be skiing fast enough to crash hard himself, but could always be fallen on by a twenty-stone beginner, or hit by a drag lift, so a helmet is essential

Two-year olds will probably start by being pulled along the flat, holding the end of one of your poles. After half an hour or so they'll be ready to be carried or dragged a few yards up a gentle slope, and allowed to slide back into the arms of Mummy, or someone else in whom they have total confidence (probably not Daddy!).

From as young as their third birthday, children can learn to go up the drag lift and ski back down in gorgeous little parallel turns, though still only for about an hour per day. A parent can help with the initial stages, such as getting used to the drag lift. You put one of your skis between the child's, put the drag between your own legs, and push the child along with your leg. But most parents are survival skiers, getting down the piste in spite of their technique, not because of it. Children learn largely through imitation, and they need someone technically perfect to copy. If you can get an instructor from your own country, it makes life a lot easier. Children find even practically bilingual foreigners very confusing!

The easiest way for them to learn is with a private instructor per child. This is very expensive. You can halve the price by sharing the lesson between two children, but with two tiny beginners an instructor spends most of his time rushing between them, preventing wipe-outs and tantrums. It costs half as much, and each child learns a quarter as much and enjoys it a tenth as much! Ski holidays are expensive, but if you want your children to learn to ski and be happy there is no alternative to spending a bit more.

Once your child can get on and off lifts alone, you can start thinking about shared lessons or even ski school, so long as classes are small and lessons relatively short. But don't rush them. Skiing is only meant to be a bit of fun. If they are as happy tobogganing or building a snowman, let them.

A three- or four-year old with, say, twenty hours' experience on the nursery slopes can probably manage to ski a green run with his or her parents. And that will be the proudest moment of your life! And if they don't get there until they're six or eight, who cares? As one Brit living in a ski resort was recently heard to say, ‘My lad skied red runs at three, blacks at four, bumps and slalom at five, and got his adult Giant Slalom badge at six. But he still can't write his own name!

Most successful teams are that way because of excellent leadership. They have quarterbacks who are smart, quick, and possess the ability to co-ordinate eleven players into a smooth-working team.

The quarterback is often referred to as the "engineer of the football machine." More than anyone else on the team, he must know what makes it tick. He must have a thorough knowledge of all aspects of offensive play. He must know exactly what each member of his team is capable of doing and not doing.

He must keep in his mind the exact details of each of the team's offensive patterns. Additionally, the quarterback must be able to quickly size up the other team's defensive patterns, spotting both their weaknesses and their strengths.

The quarterback's position is the most exciting one in football. More boys want to play it than any of the other positions. Yet, fewer boys qualify as potentially successful quarterbacks than for any other position. It is a tough job! When you accept a position of leadership, you must also accept the responsibilities. By your own example you must set a high standard for all of your teammates.

You must have heard these words around the vacant lot or the corner playground: "Okay, if I don't get to play quarterback, I'm taking my football and going home!"

This boy will have to undergo a large change in his attitude before he will make much of a quarterback!

Here are some helpful instructions for you.

1. On most teams today, because of the type of offense used, the quarterback needs to have a sure pair of hands. He will handle the ball on most of the offensive plays. He must also be an exceptionally fine and accurate passer. He must have running ability. He should be able to block fairly well. Do you get the idea? A quarterback has to spend more time practicing on more of the football fundamentals than any other player on the team!

2. As the quarterback, you must be able to win the confidence of your teammates. When you call a play, every member of the team must feel that it will be successful.

3. Your choice of plays must be a careful one. You can't run your plays on a "hit-or-miss" basis. Whenever possible, select a play that will surprise the defense. It should be a play that they are not expecting at that time and in that particular situation. Of course, there are certain situations that call for certain types of plays and you have little choice in the matter. Try to direct such a play to the other team's weakest defensive area.

4. Never underestimate the defense! Always assume that the defense is capable in every area. You must approach the defense with the idea that only the very best performance by yourself and your teammates will make the play successful.

5. Many quarterbacks have a tendency to either "over work" their best play, or not use it enough when the situation favors the play.

6. Naturally, it is difficult to come up with the right play at the right time on every call. However, one or two well-chosen plays in every series of downs will usually keep your team moving ahead with the ball and keep it in your possession. Of course, your over-all plan is based on getting into the other team's end zone for a touchdown as quickly as possible.

7. Remember that you will receive play suggestions from your teammates. Give every consideration to their ideas. The passing game is important Successful offensive football today depends to a great extent on the ability of your team to advance the ball through the air. In our modern game, this is the easiest, quickest, and most advantageous way of moving the ball.

This, in turn, depends on how sharp you, as the quarterback, are on your passing. You must be able to pass accurately and also select the right pass play at the right time. You must move quickly to take advantage of lapses on pass defense.

Practise hard and you may be offered the valuable position of quarterback.

Beginning Your Own Sailing Adventures

The great day has arrived at last you're about to sail the boat by yourself. It's all very well to say, "Don't be nervous," but as with most new things in your life it is sometimes a little hard to get used to a sailboat. It's not that you're afraid of capsizing (you wouldn't be so foolish as to get into a sailboat if you couldn't swim); it's just the strangeness of the feeling in your bones as the boat leans with the wind and the confusing sound the sails make overhead.

One consolation is to realize that if you get confused in a sailboat, it's perfectly safe to let everything go. When you let out the sheet, the wind spills out of the loosened sail. And although the sail flaps away noisily, you quickly realize that the boat has flattened out like an old bathtub and slowed down to a mere drift.

In a sailboat you can just let go. Try it a couple of times, to gain confidence and relaxation. Pull in the sheet and feel the boat tip as you tighten the sail against the push of the wind. Drop the mainsheet and feel the wind spill and the sail loosen and the boat flatten out. Any time that anything goes wrong while sailing, let go of the sheets. This provides time to meditate on the situation.

You sit in your boat forward of the tiller (so that you can swing it freely, to steer) and opposite your sail (so that you can balance the weight of it as well as look at it easily.) You will want to check your sail every few minutes, since its lower third, up next the mast, is like an instrument panel in a car or plane.

This is the area you will check to see if your sails are set right. While it's all very well to stare up at the whole mainsail, for the wonder of it, luckily for your neck the lower part is all you have to keep looking at. Here's how you check the set of your mainsail:

You let the sail out, by letting the sheet in your hand run out, until the sail begins to luff. This means that the sail in the instrument-panel section begins to flutter and bubble. Then you pull in the sail till the luffing just stops; that is the best set for your mainsail.

Remember that this sail isn't, after all, a perfect triangle. If you look at it, you'll see that it is skillfully cut and seamed so that there is a curve to the whole thing. Don't pull in your sail till it's flat; just keep a nice curve in it like a bird's wing.

So much for the general controls for your boat; now let's take a look at how to get started.

Getting Underway

If you are moored at a buoy, the bow will lie into the wind. For an example of getting underway, let's say that there are several boats close to your port side, so you decide to go off to starboard in other words, on a port tack. (A boat is sailing on a port tack when the wind is coming over its port side.) With both sails hoisted, haul in the starboard jib sheet, taking up all the slack. Push the clew of the jib to port; the wind will fill the sail and force the bow of the boat to starboard.

As soon as the boat begins to swing around, let go of the sail and take up on the starboard jib sheet. Swing the tiller to port; this will help push the nose of the boat to starboard. (Unlike the steering wheel of a car, a tiller is moved in the direction opposite to the one you wish to swing the boat.) Then trim the mainsail by taking in the mainsheet until the sail is fairly flat. As the jib pushes the boat around, the mainsail will fill, and the boat will move forward.

At this moment, cast off the mooring and you'll begin to make headway.
Congratulations! You've begun sailing.

Lighthouses: Explaining The Guiding Light

Lighthouses are the signal stations by means of which mariners determine their exact position. Mariners had once to be satisfied with natural landmarks, from which to obtain their bearings. These often being lacking at points where most needed, towers were built, and eventually lights were placed in many of them. The modern lighthouse represents the scientific development of this same idea, the signaling equipment being the culmination of many years of striving to overcome the limitations of visibility and audibility.

Coloring Of Structures

Color is applied to lighthouses and automatic light structures for the purpose of making them readily distinguishable from the background against which they are seen, and to distinguish one structure from others in the same general vicinity. Solid colors, bands of color, and various patterns are applied solely for these purposes.

Minor light structures are sometimes painted black or red, to indicate the sides of the channel which they mark, following the same system used in the coloring of buoys. When so painted, red structures mark the right side of the channel, and black structures the left side of the channel, entering from seaward.

Light Colors And Characteristics

The colors of the lights shown from lighthouses, and their characteristics or manner in which they flash, are for the purpose of distinguishing one light from others in the general vicinity and avoiding confusion with lights used for other purposes.

The length of the flashes and the intervals between may be accurately timed, and positive identification made by consulting the Light Lists. The colors of minor lights, when red or green, may also have the further significance of indicating the side of the channel which the light marks, red being on the right, and green on the left side entering from seaward.

Fog Signal Characteristics

Fog signals, both at lighthouses and on lightships, sound distinctive blasts. This is for the purpose of distinguishing one station from another. The characteristic of every fog signal is given in the Light Lists, and many of them are also given on the charts. All signals sound on a definite schedule, and positive identification may be made, even when the sending station is not visible, by timing the length of the blasts and the intervals between. With practice, mariners may also differentiate between the signals produced by the different types of apparatus.

Lightships

Lightships serve the same essential purpose as lighthouses. They take the form of ships only because they are to occupy stations at which it would be impracticable to build lighthouses. Hulls of all lightships in United States waters, excepting Ambrose Lightship, are now painted red with the name of the station in white on both sides. The superstructures are white, with the masts, lantern galleries, ventilators and stacks in buff.

All the signals, the masthead light, the fog signal, and the radiobeacon have distinctive characteristics, so that the lightship may readily be identified under all conditions. A riding-light on the forestay indicates the direction that the ship is heading, and as lightships ride to a single anchor, this also indicates the direction of the current.

Present day lightships are built of steel, with either steam or Diesel engine propulsion. Power for the operation of the signals is obtained from suitable auxiliary machinery. Each lightship has a crew of from 6 to 15 men.

Buoys

The primary function of buoys is to warn the mariner of some danger, some obstruction, or change in the contours of the sea bottom, that he may avoid the dangers and continue his course in safe waters.

The utmost advantage is obtained from buoys when they are considered as marking definitely identified spots, for if a mariner be properly equipped with charts, and knows his precise location at the moment, he can readily plot a safe course on which to proceed. Such features as size, shape, coloring, numbering, and signaling equipment, are but means to these ends of warning, guiding, and orienting.

These are all essential aids for any yachtsman.

L.A. Lakers - Big Surprise This Season

Today is January 11th, 2008 and the Dallas Mavericks hold the best record in the West with a 24-11 record. The Phoenix Suns have the second best record at 25-11, no surprises so far as we expected these two teams to be were they are at this time of season. Third best record in the West belongs to the San Antonio Spurs at 23-11 but they are not alone, tied with them for the third best record is the Los Angeles Lakers.

Who would have thought! The Lakers have been one of the biggest surprises this season. It just seems like yesterday that Kobe Bryant no longer wanted to play on Los Angeles anymore and demanded to be traded, I'm sure he is glad that the Lakers never followed through with his demands. There are two reasons that the Lakers are were they are at so far this season.

#1: The Lakers bench - They have been very consistent this season and are one of the best benches in the league. Farmar, Walton, Radmanovic, Vujacic & the rest of the gang have all been getting the job done. Seems like there is always someone who steps up when needed.

#2: Andrew Bynum- The emergence of this youngster is being noticed by the rest of the NBA this year. Mitch Kupchak who has been criticized a lot for his decisions since taking over as the Lakers GM may have made a great decision here in not trading Bynum when many teams were making great offers for him. One offer was a Jason Kidd for Bynum trade, very tempting but Kupchak said no and La La Land is happy about this one. Also seemed like Bynum woke up when Kobe Bryant was publicly criticizing him.

The Lakers have a good shot at making the Western Conference Finals this season but there is one team I just can't see them getting by - The San Antonio Spurs.

The Critical Difference Between A Fighter And A Killer

Lately, here in Las Vegas, I've had the pleasure of meeting a number of Mixed Martial Arts competitors from the various "No Holds Barred" events like the UFC and Pride. For the most part these fighters were amazing physical specimens and tremendous competitors. Their skills in the arena are impressive and fun to watch. The other factor across the board is the fighters I met are very good natured guys.

At one of the events I was introduced by an MMA friend of mine to one of the top competitors and this fighter asked through his translator if I was a MMA competitor. Before I could answer, my friend (who had a couple of beers in him since he was not on this fight card) smiled and said, "Nah, this guy's a killer, he just likes to teach you how to stab people to death or beat their brains out with a tire iron. You'd like his course!"(Always great to have friends give this kinda PR "help")

Then the fighter asked if I taught how to "defend" against knives and guns. My friend once again "answered" for me saying "Oh yeah and more than one attacker, I mean, its prison riot training" (Again very "helpful"; I'm sure the translator loved me!) Then the fighter told of his cousin being assaulted and stabbed by 2 men in his home country. He said he felt bad because he truly couldn't give his cousin (who survived the attack) any "tips" on how to "fight" people with knives.

He then said: "Quite frankly for all my skills in the ring I doubt I could have done much better. I know how to kick someone's ass on the mat but on the street it's so different."He then had to leave and get ready for his match (which he easily won that night, absolutely wrecking his opponent). We exchanged info and he got the dates when I'd be in Europe this year.

This meeting got me thinking about the difference between a fighter and a killer: The fighter competes to better an opponent; the killer is solely focused on ending the other person. The fighter seeks to score points or get someone to submit; the killer seeks to shut down the other's brain. The fighter is good at kicking someone's ass; the killer knows how to irreparably injure vulnerable areas of the human body, permanently wrecking the function of that area.

The fighter relies on superior strength, speed and skill; the killer uses stealth and violence of action to get his results.The fighter's skills deteriorate after his competitive years are over; the killer's skills can last a lifetime.The fighter's skills work best in the controlled environment of the ring; the killer's skills work in any act of violence.

I could go on but you get the point. Now some of you may be pursuing competitive MMA careers and I wish you the best. After you hang up your gi or MMA trunks you may find the skills of a killer more useful.For the rest of you please ask yourself where do you see yourself applying your martial arts or combat sport training?

If it is in the chaotic world of real violence then you are hamstringing yourself with rules and skills that are only good for the young, fast, and strong. Not to mention whether or no the other guy plays by your rules; most murderers tend not to abide by any competition standards.

At least explore the world of the killer and see how despite the name, the skills are easily learned and last a lifetime. Also the byproduct of learning these skills is you get to live a far more relaxed and peaceful life. Strange but true. Remember there is a big difference between being a killer and a murderer. And if you face a murderer; then only the skills of a killer will properly prepare you for that situation.

There are enough areas in the United States that have the animal resources capable of supporting hunting during all seasons of the year. While the hunter might not like the choices of game, they might consider hunting something totally foreign to them to be a nice change of pace. Whenever I look at Lou Gehrig’s statistics I find something new about the man. Like the number of triples he hit. Or all the runs he scored. Thirteen consecutive years scoring at least 100 runs to go along with the same 13 consecutive years of driving in at least 100 runs. Eight years accumulating at least 200 hits. All these statistics and a lifetime batting average of 340 to boot. He is also 3rd in slugging per cent age and 3rd in on base and slugging per cent age (OPS) all time. Lou Gehrig more than any other player I have studied has been the epitome of class, success and production. When I think of RBIs I always think of Columbia Lou. When I think of a great teammate or a champion my mind consistently recalls his name.

Being a Yankee fan as I was growing up, anything connected with the Yanks caught my eye. When I saw "Pride of The Yankees," with Gary Cooper and Teresa Wright I found another hero. Gary Cooper’s portrayal of Lou Gehrig was that of a strong, focused and quiet man. I related I was very quiet as a kid. His success made me feel good. I was so proud that I liked the Yankees because Lou Gehrig was a part of my team. You did not get any better than Lou.

Lou Gehrig has been an inspiration for me. I look at what he has accomplished in his baseball life. I am amazed. I have seen film of Lou batting without a shirt on. As his muscles rip as he swings the bat I am reminded of his awesome power and strength.

As much as Lou is admired, I wonder if he would have been more of an icon had he not played in the shadow of Babe Ruth.

Aside the nutritional aspects of algal attraction, its electromagnetic field may well be far more important than is estimated at the present time... How to Bat in Baseball

Take a boy to the ball field and guess what he will pick up for the first time... a glove or a bat? Right. Just about everybody who plays baseball, or who ever thought of playing baseball, loves to bat. Some players have the gift of being "born" hitters; that is, they are blessed with excellent eyesight, quick reflexes, strong wrists and husky shoulders. These players usually become the better batters, but that does not mean the average player with normal build and strength cannot become a moderately successful batter.

Selecting a Bat - Take a bat and swing it. If it feels "good" and is not too heavy or not too light, try it out. Do not use a bat that is too long, stay away from a bat that is too short. To help you select the right type of bat, remember that the average school player uses one that is about thirty-four inches long. Also, the weight of the bat is equal to one ounce for each inch. Thus a 34-34 bat, in length and weight, is just about average.

Stance - Many batters approach the plate and do not know how close, or how far, to stand from the plate. Some batters wonder whether they should stand in front of the batter's box, others cannot decide whether it is best to place their feet to the rear of the batter's box. None of this is important in the learning stage of batting, but what is important is that the batter makes himself comfortable at the plate.

When a batter takes his stance, he is taking one of three stances: the parallel stance, the closed stance, the open stance. Each stance has its advantages, but the batter who feels most comfortable in any of the three should use that particular stance.

Again, just which stance to assume is strictly a matter of choice and comfort. However, the more advanced player may, on occasion, switch stances according to the type of pitcher he is facing, or the situation in the game.

In the closed stance only the front foot (the left if a right-handed batter, the right if a left-handed batter) is closer to the plate.

In the parallel stance both feet are the same distance from the inside batter's box line closest to the plate.

Spread - The spread of the feet is also a matter of individual taste. Some batters prefer to keep their feet close together thus making for a longer stride when swinging at the pitch. Others will take a medium spread, thus shortening the stride; and there are some batters who will take a wide spread and therefore cut down their stride to a minimum.

The average hitter normally spreads his feet about seventeen to nineteen inches and many coaches recommend this spread distance. The power hitter, however, will use a shorter spread since he gets most of his strength from a longer stride. Joe DiMaggio had just about the widest of all spreads and his stride was one of the shortest. But the average batter should not attempt to imitate great batters in spread and stride unless he feels comfortable doing it.

It is not good for the beginning player to take too close a spread because it may cause a lunge in the stride. The stride should be smooth and quick, therefore the proper spread is most important.

Grip - Just as in choosing a bat, taking a stance and assuming a spread, comfort dictates, for the most part, just how to grip the bat. Some batters keep their hands together; others may leave a bit of space between the hands when gripping the bat. No matter what type of grip, hands together or apart, the bat is not to be gripped too tightly.

By keeping the fingers securely, but not tightly, around the bat and the fingers aligned on the bat, the batter can get a better snap of the wrists when meeting the ball. Grip a bat too tightly and the arm muscles automatically tighten up thus permitting no wrist action.

Grasp these basics of baseball batting, and you will be off to a great start.

Become a better free throw shooter

Your team is down by one in a crucial basketball game and you get fouled with two seconds left in the game. You can end it by making the two free throws so hopefully you can shoot them like Reggie Miller because if you can't and shoot them like Shaq O'neal then chances are you'll probably only tie the game or even worse make your team lose the game by missing both.

This is why shooting free throws is such an important part of your game and many just don't practice enough. Lots of times the win-loss result of a game is because of free throws.

One thing that helps someone is repeating the same behavior pattern before you shoot. A regular task so to speak that will help your concentration and focus. A player might dribble the ball three times before he shoots a free throw and not doing so would completely throw his focus out of wack. One might lift his hands in the air a few times before he shoots it. One might touch his cheek a few times. Look at mostly all the great free throw shooters and they all have a ritual before they shoot. It could even be a saying to yourself, even a prayer. Doing this will bring familiarity each time your at the charity strike and will really help alot.

Another thing to do is to visualize in your mind what you are going to do before you do it. When you see the basket going "Swish" through that net in your mind there is more of a chance that it will happen.

Also trust in yourself, this kind of goes back to the visualization but you must have self confidence. If you look at a player like Shaq O'Neal he has completely lost confidence and just knows that he will never be a 80% free throw shooter. He has worked with the best trainers and still can not shot free throws - Don't ever let that happen to you, there is always room for improvement. Don't delay and hesitate when you shoot, this will not help at all. Just do it! You just seen yourself swishing it so do it!

You might also want to pat yourself on the back after making y9our free throws. Feel good about it, go ahead, feel a little cocky. I remember once I shot 1000 free throws, not all in one day but I would keep a pencil and keep track. I ended up making 690 out of them and was very disappointed. I always thought I was a better free throw shooter than that. After capitalizing on what I've mentioned above I ended up making 880 the next time around. Shooting free throws became automatic and I just knew that I could not miss.

Confidence is a big thing with free throws. When I made the 690 lots of times I would miss one free throw, get down on myself and visualized I would miss the next one, guess what, I missed the next one. Sometimes I would miss 5 in a row because of the lack of confidence, that it why I was a 69% shooter. At times I would hit 20 in a row and then miss 5 in a row. Do that and your only a 75% free throw shooter!

Alhassan Bangura facing deportation

19-year-old Alhassan 'Al' Bangura is getting lots of support in Britain. He is facing the possibility of getting deported to his native land of Sierra Leone where he fears his life would be at danger from a witchcraft cult.

He has made a nice life and has a promising career with Watford in his adopted land in London where he has been for the past four years. To make matters worse, he has a new born baby with his girlfriend.

But Bangura is living on borrowed time, facing being sent back to the west African country he fled when he was 15 because he feared his father's links to a voodoo sect made him next in line for the men with the machetes. Refugees from Sierra Leone, which is still recovering from a brutal civil war, are not automatically eligible for asylum in Britain so each case must be individually proved.

It is rare in a game when you see fans of the opposition rooting for another teams player but that was the case when Watford played Plymouth. Bangura was given massive applause from both teams fans and was touched with so much emotion in him, so grateful for the support that he could hardly say a word.

A petition has been sent around and thousands have signed it for him to stay in Britain. Even singing artist Elton John has support for Bangura and has personally written to the government.

Bangura says his late father was chief of a secret society, the Soko, which practices witchcraft. His family were told that he was expected to succeed his father and would be forced to undergo an initiation ceremony involving mutilation.

Bangura is not allowed to speak to the media right now due to the sensitive case in hand but before he had said that he feared what his fate would be if he was delivered back into the arms of the cult.

"They're not good things that they are doing; they cut off bits of their body," he said.

If he were forced to return home, "it would be like someone is just taking my life away."

That Bangura made it to Britain is a story in itself. From Sierra Leone he had found his way to Guinea and then was helped by a mysterious Frenchman he only knew by the name of Pierre, who helped him to London. When two men had tried to rape him he then realized that he had fallen victim to a people trafficker. He escaped and stood in a hotel while applying for asylum. He was then seen playing amateur soccer by a Watford talent scout and things only went good from there. Up until now of course.

His club, lawyers and politicians are working overtime to keep Bangura in Britain.

Claire Ward, a lawmaker for the ruling Labour party who represents Watford, arranged a meeting this week between Bangura's representatives and an immigration minister.

She believes he has a good chance of winning an appeal.

"There are a number of factors in his favour such as the age he came into the country and the constructive way he has used his time here -- he has been a role model and has taken part in youth projects and he has contributed to the British economy.

"He has a strong case."

Many people every year decide to try their hand at a new sport. However, it is not always as easy as dropping by the local park for a game of drop in football. What if a person wants to learn to play hockey? Or if someone has just moved into a new house near a golf course and wants to pick up some pointers on how to play, and get the most use out of their new location? Finding sports instruction can be a challenge, but it doesn’t have to be. Knowing where to look is half the battle.

First, research is important before a single piece of sports equipment is purchased. “Is this sport right for me?” is a question that must be honestly answered. Will there be ample time and space to practice? If a person is interested in pick up games or even joining an amateur league, are those things available locally? If not, how dedicated is the person to driving a long distance to pursue the sports hobby? The best way to fail at any given sport is to fail to think it through before deciding to begin.

Next, go to the location where the sport will take place. If it is ice skating, drop by the local rink. If it is golf, head to the golf course and go to the clubhouse. Talk with the staff and find out if anyone offers lessons locally. Many times, sports facilities will offer group lessons for low cost for people to try their hand at a new sport. Being with others who are taking the same lessons can also be a great way to make new friends. However, if more intensive instruction is desired, private lessons can also be arranged. Steroids and MLB

With all the steroid stuff going on with MLB it seems that most of the attention has been brought to San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds. I'm not going to talk about Bonds case in particular but more about the steroid use in baseball.

We all know that steroids make you stronger. We all should also know that steroids do not give you any skills though. For instance, if someone got all juiced up on steroids he would still need the skill of a baseball player to make contact with a 90 MPH fastball and the other abilities that a baseball player needs. For instance, I am not a baseball player and if I started taking steroids I would not be a better baseball player. No way, no chance, no hell. So what does it matter some say. Well at least that was the view of some callers in a local sports talk radio show.

Well, it does matter. You have to understand that these guys already have the skills of a baseball player. They have been playing since they were kids. Now, let's say a guy on steroids slams 60 or 70 home runs during the season, you have to understand that without the steroids many of the shots would have been caught at the warning track. That extra muscle from the drug carried those balls over the fence. The guy would have probably hit 35-40 home runs had he not been on steroids. Remember those days, when 40 home runs were good enough to lead the league in home runs? Back in the 80's if you smacked 20 home runs in a season you were considered a home run hitter!

Looking at the situation from a players prospective is easy too though if you think about it. If you are not on steroids and a younger player come up from the minors and he can take your job, there can be a lot of pressure to get on steroids. Especially if you are not performing too well, maybe in a slump and there he is on steroids hitting home runs left and right. You might do anything to save your job. Just a few thoughts on the subject here.

Improve your tennis game

If one has never played tennis before , they can not realize how tough it is to play. There is much stress and strain on your body and nerves. With out much practice it is almost impossible to master tennis, it would be a good idea to join a pricey tennis club, it could only make you better. Taking private tennis lessons can be very costly. Plus, it may feel like you spend most of your lessons retrieving tennis balls rather than hitting them. Despite these set backs, your tennis game can improve if you follow some tips.

One of the most important things to do is to make sure you have the right equipment. Is your tennis racquet 10 years old? Get a new one then. Is it wooden? If it is then get rid of it, your going to need a graphite racquete so that you can have more power and a bigger hitting area. Of course this will only help you to hit that winning shot! If you don't have a graphite racquet you can get one for $20 to $30, a small investment well worth it.

Start practicing by hitting against a board or tennis wall. You can find these unyielding "opponents" at public tennis courts. You can construct a hitting board at your home if you desire by placing a wooden board against a fence. The definite height and weight of the hitting board will force you to focus on accuracy. Try to hit 8-10 balls against the wall without missing. Once you have improved your consistency you are ready to face an opponent.

Your feet should never be planted into the ground during a tennis game. Make sure that your feet are always moving. It don't matter if you are running for a shot or if your about to slip step in response to your opponents shot. Remember, you need to cover the entire court and have to be ready to cover any part of that court in a split second. Beginning tennis players are often caught out of position and this leads to them hitting a weak shot back at their opponent. Always remember to Shuffle back to the center of the baseline between each shot.

The one-handed backhand is something that you will need to learn. You don't really need to but it will greatly benefit you. Sure, a two-handed backhand will generate more power but it is very limited. It takes longer to get into position using a two-handed backhand and it is far easier to get jammed up, too. A one-handed backhand is more versatile and you will be a better player by incorporating it into your game.

This is one tip here that many don't do to well with. Make sure you keep your emotions in tact. Frustration comes with all sports and a mad or angry player is never a better player, you can become more aggressive and hit the ball harder than you should,of course your hits will be too long. If you lose a game don't let it be because of your emotions.

Spin should become a major weapon in your game. Spin can derail your opponent because they have trouble figuring out where your ball is going. Spin can also make a ball that looks like it is going out, drop back in. Professionals generate immense amounts of topspin and backspin. Follow their lead to watch your tennis game soar.

I have never been a real big hockey fan, maybe being from Southern California had something to do with it. Not many people here are into hockey as much as baseball, football and basketball. But I remember as a kid looking at the NHL standings and rooting for the L.A. Kings to be in first place. Sometimes they were but most of the time not, most city's could probably say that about their home teams. There was always a team though that year after year seemed to be near the top and that was the Detroit Red Wings.

It still has not ended as I am now a grown adult, they are still one of the elite NHL teams.I mean, don't teams ever need to rebuild and have a couple bad seasons during the rebuilding process. Teams do get old you know. Wouldn't a salary cap slow you down. You can't be good forever when you are never near the top of the draft to pick up the top future players, right? Normally the answer would be - of course. The Detroit Red Wings never got the memo though!

They are on pace to win at least 50 games for the third straight season, Detroit looks to match the Montreal Canadians of 1974-82 as the only teams in NHL history to reach 100 points for eight straight seasons. And, lest we forget, the Wings own the longest current postseason streak in pro sports with 16 straight playoff appearances, including 15 in a row that have started on home ice.

Detroit is one of the all time great franchises in NHL history. They have 10 Stanley Cups under their belt, third most in NHL history. The Toronto Maple Leafs for second place on the list with 13. If your wondering who has the most, well let's just say that it will be sometime before they, or anyone else ever catches the Montreal Canadiens who have 24 championships.

New England Patriots become second team in NFL history to go 14-0

Well the New Enland Patriots did it. They became only the second NFL football team to ever go 14-0 as they beat the New York Jets 20-14. They may have used a different tactic this time by using a running game but a win is a win and they will go down in history.

Even with the chilly gusts above 20 mph flowing and the rain pouring down, Laurence Maroney's rushing was the key to this win instead of the passing of Tom Brady. With the win the Patriots clinched home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.

The Patriots held on to a 17-7 lead headed into the 4th quarter and the two teams just exchanged field goals in the 4th. Maroney ran for 104 yards, just the fourth time this season a New England rusher surpassed 100. The Jets entered the game having allowed the third most yards rushing this season. Brady didn't throw a touchdown pass for the first time this season and completed 14 of 27 passes for 140 yards and an interception. The Patriots remaining games are at home against Miami and at the New York Giants.

California Summer Camps

It can be really fun to grow up as a kid in California. It is one of the biggest state, and the opportunities for fun and adventure are tremendous. In my family, there was a tradition surrounding California summer camps. We are not one of these families that go to the same California summer camp year after year. I knew a lot of people like that, people whose uncles, aunts, grandfathers, and grandmothers had all gone to one particular camp with some fake sounding Indian name. That was not my family at all. Our tradition was finding a new camp every year, one which offered exciting new possibilities.

The first summer camp California I went to was a fairly traditional one. It was a San Francisco summer camp, targeted towards elementary school kids like me, and had all of the standard activities. There was arts and crafts, waterfront sports, volleyball, tennis, and hiking. The hiking was my favorite. California summer camps have some of the best hiking in the world because California has some of the best outdoors in the world. We would hike for miles and miles along twisting trails through the woods. I now know that I was always within a mile of my California summer camp, but back then I felt like I was lost in the wilderness. It was exciting and a little bit scary. I loved every moment of it.

Of course, later on I went to California summer camps that were almost the opposite of this. Once I went to a California summer technology camp that was really cool. We got to play with supercomputers. It was in the early 90s, and computers were not as sophisticated as they are now. We got to see high tech graphic stations, huge liquid cooled supercomputers, and even a cyclotron! Of all of the California summer camps that I went to, I think it was my favorite. It really got me thinking about a career in technology. Many of the California summer camps are funded by the high-tech industry, so this was exactly what they intended. If it weren't for this camp, I never would have discovered my lifelong passion for computers.

The Importance of Stretching

No matter what sporting event you ever go to, you will always see the athletics warming up before the event. Why? Well, first of all it is essential to optimal performance but most importantly for the safety of the athletic.

When ever you are going to work your body hard you will want to stretch your muscles and prepare them for the pain they are about to experience. Your flexibility is also increased. Many don't realize that besides stretching before performing, one should also stretch after performance while your muscles are still warmed up. Why? Because this can really benefit your flexibility.

For those not used of stretching much, it can be a challenging task. It's important to not try the toughest and hardest stretches at the beginning, just like anything else it's best to start and progress incrementally. While stretching it is best to hold your stretch at minimum twenty seconds, if you can hold it for even longer like around sixty seconds even better. This will increasingly develop your bodies flexibility. Do not bounce your stretches, if you do that you can force yourself into a forced position that can can create strain or damage in certain joints or muscles. All muscle groups in your body need to be warmed up. Your legs, arms, shoulders and even your neck. One important thing to remember when stretching is to know your limitations. Do not force yourself to do a stretch that you can barely do, this has no benefit to you, soon enough in time you will be able to do almost all stretches but this comes with time.

Please remember that exercises and workouts are terrific for the body and your heart. Many forget how healthy cardiovascular exercises such as running, jogging, biking or swimming are for the heart. If you get bored with your stretching routine don't be afraid to put on some music to keep you occupied and entertained during your workout. A good habit to get for yourself is to regularly do some stretching everyday. If you don't work out everyday at least you can get in your daily stretches.

Just always remember how foolish it is to play in a hockey game, football game, baseball game, soccer game or any other sport without stretching first. It is as foolish as going into a hockey game without putting on your helmet or standing at the baseball plate without a helmet on. you wouldn't do that would you? Of course not, because you know that it increases the chances that you can get hurt. The same goes with stretching, it greatly reduces your chance of getting hurt. Keep stretching and take care of your body and your heart.

Pat Riley wins his 1200th NBA game

Miami Heat coach Pat Riley became only the 3rd NBA coach to ever win 1200 games as his Miami Heat beat the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles at the Staples Center. He joins Don Nelson and Lenny Wilkins. If you want to measure how long they took to reach the milestone, Riley has done it quicker than Nelson or Wilkins. It took Pat Riley his 1842nd game to do it. That's 248 games quicker than Don Nelson who is next on the list. In 24 years of coaching Riley has 5 NBA titles under his belt, 4 with the Los Angeles Lakers and 1 with the Miami Heat.

"It's those kind of moments that you'll always remember, good and bad," said Riley, who began his career with the Lakers and also coached the New York Knicks. "The first 600 (533) were here in Los Angeles — a lot of great players, guys. You know all of them. Dwyane thinks I'm extinct, but that's OK. That's what he said to me in there."

Riley of course was talking about Miami Heat superstar Dwayne Wade. It kind of made it special that Riley reached his mark right in the city that it all started for him in the 80's as he took over as coach for one of the best teams ever to play basketball, the showtime Lakers led by Magic Johnson. He then went on to coach the New York Knicks until finding a place in Miami.

New England Patriots remain undefeated and beat Pissburgh Stellers to improve to 13-0

The New England Patriots remain undefeated as they stompered on the Pittsburgh Stellers this Sunday.

Steelers safety Anthony Smith who had guaranteed his team would win stuck his foot in his mouth.

"It was said, it was documented and it was printed," Randy Moss of the New England Patriots said. "We wanted it more."

Even New England coach Bill Belichick, who rarely criticizes opponents publicly, took a shot at the second-year pro: "We've played against a lot better safeties than him."

Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin discounted the impact of Smith's guarantee.

"The comments were irrelevant," he said. "It's how you play when the game begins."

Smith said they weren't reported accurately.

"If I had been quoted right, it wouldn't have come out the way it did," he said.

The Steelers would have clinched a playoff berth with a victory, but still lead the AFC North.

Smith's guarantee "definitely fired them up," Steelers quarterback Ben Roethslisberger said of the Patriots.

Just before the 2-minute warning at the end of the game, the fans began chanting "Guarantee!" to mock Smith, whose picture was shown on the scoreboard.

The Steelers were unlikely victims. They started the day allowing just 12.9 points per game with only one reception of more than 40 yards. The Patriots had two catches of over 50 Sunday.

With or with out guarantees my other teams the Patriots are looking to make history as they have become only the 5th team in history to post a 13-0 record. The others were the 1934 Chicago Bears, the 1972 Miami Dolphins, 1998 Denver Broncos and the 2005 Indianapolis Colts. Next week they will try to go 14-0, becoming the first team to accomplish that feat since the 1972 Dolphins who went on to win their three playoff games and had a perfect season.

Using Air Mattresses

I used to love camping when I was a child. I never minded sleeping in a sleeping bag for several days. As I've gotten older, I've discovered that my body just isn't made like it used to be. My idea of roughing it in the great outdoors consists of either renting a cabin somewhere or having an air mattress in a very large tent. I'd much rather sleep in a bed in a rented cabin, but an air mattress is second best. After carefully shopping for a comfortable air mattress, which I didn't think existed, we did manage to find one. The most wonderful part of it is that it comes with a tiny pump that inflates the air mattress within minutes. The air mattress sits about a foot off of the ground, so you don't get the dampness of the ground when you're sleeping. There's nothing worse than waking up and feeling damp and wet. I never used to mind it but apparently my body gets aches and pains when it is damp. The joys of getting older.

We found our comfortable air mattress at Eastern Mountain Sports. While they had lots of different types of air mattresses, we chose this one to suit our needs the best. The salespeople were incredibly helpful. There were many other stores in which we had found a particular air mattress that we liked but most of those stores did not have any sales reps on hand to help us. We ended up paying a tiny bit more for the air mattress but it was worthwhile because of having the personalized assistance. I was absolutely amazed that the air mattress that we chose came in such a small box. It didn't seem possible. But, the clerk handed us a rather small box which supposedly included the air mattress and the pump. I almost laughed but the look on his face told me that he was serious. How could a queen sized large air mattress fit into such a small box? It did though.
So, we headed off with my brother and his wife for a weekend of camping. After pitching our tent and clearing away all of the rocks, we set up our campsite for the weekend. About an hour before it started to get dark, I decided that we should inflate the air mattress. Much to our surprise and delight, the air mattress inflated fully within two minutes. The salesman was right. I climbed into bed that night, moving around a bit more than expected on the air mattress, but slept very comfortably. I only smiled the next morning when I heard others complaining about having slept poorly in their sleeping bags. miscellaneous

NBA Coaches to wear Microphones

On Wednesday it was announced by the NBA that coaches in ABC, TNT and ESPN will have to wear microphones during the game. They will also have to do in game timeout interviews. It has been noted that players will also be asked to wear a mic but then can decline. The NBA coaches have no choice in the matter. As you might have expected, NBA coaches are not thrilled with this whole idea.

Detroit Pistons coach Flip Saunders said he believes rules for other leagues are more liberal. In baseball, he said, managers have the option of wearing a microphone, and in the NFL, each coach must only do so once a season.

"I'm not a fan of it," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. "I'm told to do it, so I do it. I think it's unnecessary. It's not going to hinder me from doing anything.

"I look at it from a player's perspective. You try to get guys to communicate with the coach, but now the coach is miked. I don't know that I'd be that comfortable being frank with the coach if I knew he was miked and it could be on TV. Quotes get taken out of context. And people make judgments on those quotes."

Skiles revealed the league's new microphone plans Thursday but asked not to be quoted, because he wasn't sure if the information was ready to be released by the league.

Jeff Van Gundy of the New York Knicks, another microphone-leery coach, got it basically right when he told reporters on Monday that "Everybody wants to do their part to get the ratings up, but how much is too much? People buy a product because of the product, not the packaging."

The NBA has told coaches that inappropriate remarks will not be aired and strategy not divulged. David Stern, the NBA commissioner who is now engaged in damage control, said that coaches could always turn off their microphones for a stretch if they were going to address a sensitive topic.

That is all fine and fair in theory, but most of the coaches comments will still be heard and filtered by someone who is not a member of their teams. If something sensational has to be edited out, whose to say it won't be passed on or whispered on later? If something tactical has to be edited out, whose to say that rival teams won't find a way to get some access to it?

With all that said. Why don't they just let basketball be basketball. Why do we want to hear what the coach or even at that, what the players are saying. Just let me watch the game!

Some might say I'm not very brave. I don't like heights, fast speeds or defying gravity. Keeping my feet on the ground is fine for me.. The only vaguely exciting activity I have ever done is skiing, which I loved. Adventure sports are just not for me but I wish I could get over my inhibitions and go for it.

If I was braver, the first thing I would want to do is skydiving. That must be an incredible feeling, up so high and free as a bird. Some people freefall down into caves and their parachutes open just as it's getting dark and you think they are doomed. Rock climbing also looks exhilarating, although I wouldn't want to climb those mountain peaks like K2. Mountain climbing in Force 10 winds and frostbite eating at your toes doesn't really appeal. I'm also far too claustrophobic for pot holing and the thought of cave diving fills me with dread.

Beach resorts all over the world are geared up for every sort of water adventure sports. I do feel lazy, lying there whilst everyone else is jet skiing, para sailing, windsurfing and otherwise whizzing around. The most activity I indulge in on a beach is a hearty game of volleyball. I may fling a Frisbee from time to time. I think about doing something but then it's so nice to soak up the sunshine and there's all that food and drink to consume.

My fear of heights precludes me from hang gliding or a trip in a hot air balloon. Traveling in a wicker basket under a flammable, gas filled balloon is not my idea of a relaxing time. I'm sure it's thrilling but I would be on constant lookout for electricity pylons, not to mention a sudden drop in pressure to send me plunging back to earth. Adventure sports like that are made for plucky, optimistic people with good insurance policies.

I am waiting for the day when someone invents a hologram suite, like the ones in the Star Trek shows. These are computerized virtual realities, in which you can ski down a mountainside at breakneck speed and come to no harm. That's because the mountain isn't really there. Nothing is real but it feels just like reality. In other words, it's all the thrills without the spills. I could do any adventure sports I wanted then and maybe even invent a few new ones. Until that time, I'll watch others do their hot dog tricks and bungee jump from skyscrapers. Does driving into the city and back count as adventure sports these days?

Boston Celtics looking at history books with 104-59 win over New York Knicks

The Boston Celtics and New York Knicks were trying to make history in yesterdays game. Well, maybe the New York Knicks weren't trying but they still found themselves in a historical setting. Everyone knows that the Boston Celtics are a great team this year but WOW! They beat the New York Knicks 104-59 Thursday, that's right 104-59! They won by 45 points! This doesn't happen everyday to a professional basketball team. The Knicks only scored 10 points in the third quarter. No Knick starter scored over 10 points, Jamal Crawford had the most for the starters with only 8 points, Richardson had 7, Marbury, Curry and Randalph had 4 each. The Knicks leading scorer was Nate Robinson who came off the bench for 10. When the first quarter was over the Celtics lead was 27-16 (up by 11), at haltime the Celtic lead was 54-31 (up by 23), at the end of the third the Celtic lead was 82-41 (up by 41) and the game ended 104-59 (a 45 point victory). This game was the Knicks third worst lose ever and the second least points they have ever scored in a game since the shot clock came into existence. It was the Celtics sixth biggest victory and the biggest since a 153-107 over the Baltimore Bullets in 1970. With the soap opera going in New York this may have been the official ending to Isiah Thomas job in New York. "We take two steps forward and one giant step back," Thomas said. "I don't know where this game came from. I thought we played extremely selfish tonight ... Definitely didn't see this type of game coming after the last two games we played. This was just not a good night." Knicks guard Stephon Marbury had this to say "Of course I am embarrassed. We lost by nearly 50 points, I'm angry. I'm always angry when I lose, but that was just flat-out embarrassing. To lose that bad was just ridiculous." Boston's big three all sat out the fourth quarter. Garnett left the game in the third quarter when Boston was up 69-34. "I can't even remember having that much rest," Garnett said. "It's good, because we have back-to-back games. Rest is important at this time." Paul Pirce and Ray Allen both had 21 points a piece for Boston in the game. Eddie House actually hit a 3-pointer to give Boston a 50-point lead, 93-43, with 8:53 to play in the game. This game was definately one to remember, unless of course your a New York Knick fan.

The last time a team won by 50 or more points was March 18, 2007, when Houston beat the 76ers 124-74 in Philadelphia.

The largest margin of victory in the shot-clock era is 68, when the Cavaliers beat the Heat 148-80 in Cleveland on Dec. 17, 1991.

The Knicks low game is 58 points on Dec. 15, 2000, against Utah.
